TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE ON TEMPERANCE
Sunday, 22 December 2024
Though difficult at times to practice, your patience is preparing you for an eternity of peace.
Today, humans are faced with a number of minor inconveniences which could quickly build up to major annoyances. This could be blamed on a number of things, but pointing fingers does not do anybody any good. Instead, practicing temperance is crucial.
Temperance is more than just simple patience. It is tranquility, an equilibrium found within your soul after being tested multiple times in various ways. Being tempered by me is uncomfortable, but if ultimately allows you to become a patient, holy person who can give back to their community.
Trials Lead to Breakthroughs
You cannot become temperate overnight, unfortunately. Instead, I will put you through a series of tests. As always, these are never anything that you cannot overcome. Still, they may be frustrating, causing your faith to waver exponentially.
However, passing the tests will make you a stronger person. Let's say I give you your dream job, but you’re faced with an overbearing boss. You don’t want to quit the job since you’ve spent so much time building up qualifications to work it. But your boss makes you miserable each day.
One day, she crosses a line! She says something inappropriate that tests your willingness to even be there to complete your shift. But you need and want this job, so you push on.
Until she tests you again.
She continues to poke the bear until you just can’t take it anymore.
So you excuse yourself.
Temperance isn’t perfection, but rather, it is balance. In this job situation, you wouldn’t be expected to willingly suffer through mistreatment. You would, however, be expected to handle your emotions away from your overbearing boss. A good cry in your car mitigates the situation, buying you some time before you have to return to the scene.
Temperance Lasts
These skills in temperance last because they are transferable. You can carry them through different situations, using similar techniques to remain tranquil.
Practicing temperance allows you to conduct yourself in a godly way each day.
Remember, you’re not just choosing to support other people by practicing temperance, but yourself!
Reflect on these words today
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;
— 2 Peter 1:5-6
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
